The USmint.gov website placed the Thomas Jefferson's Liberty one-half ounce gold coins for sale on Aug. 30th at 12noon eastern time. For the first two hours the USmint.gov web servers were struggling to keep up with the constanting refreshing of pages and overloads from US coin collectors trying to get their hands on the newest addition to the First Spouse $10 Gold coin program. It took only two-three hours before the U.S. Mint website had updated the Jefferson's Liberty Coin desciption page with a "Waiting List Notice". The notice from USmint.gov reads:
"Waiting List Notice: The number of orders we have taken meets the maximum limit for the Thomas Jefferson’s Liberty First Spouse One-Half Ounce Gold Proof Coin. You may still place an order for this product, which will go on a waiting list. If a product becomes available due to an order cancellation, we will fulfill orders from the waiting list on a first-in, first-out basis. We cannot provide information about your position on the waiting list.
When your order is placed on the waiting list, you will receive an order receipt. This is not a guarantee that you will receive your order. If we are not able to fulfill part of all of your order, you will receive a cancellation or sold-out notification. If you paid by check, you will receive a refund.
If paying by credit card, please be sure your credit card information remains current to avoid any delays in processing your order. If your credit card has expired by the time of shipment, your order will be cancelled. To update credit card information after an order has been placed, you must call 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468)."
In the first two to three hours of sales there were an estimated 27,000 orders placed before the notices were posted. People continue to place their orders with the USmint.gov website and hope that they'll get a chance at a new shiney $10 Gold Coin or two.
The fact of reality is that only the purchases with the lowest order numbers will have priority on recieving coins. Some people will have their orders cancelled because their credit cards will be expiring soon but not that many. If the coins were purchased after the notice was put up, chances are, you're not getting coins.
The reason for this guide is to warm people to WAIT when purchase these coins from Ebay. The coins aren't even expected to ship until 9/24/07. The pre-sale rules are very close to being violated in most cases because even with expedited shipping, most coins won't be in collectors hands in 30 days. The larger issue at hand is knowing whether or not your seller on Ebay is going to be recieving a coin in the first place. Check to see if the seller has posted an order number with their listing. You'll be able to tell shortly what order numbers are high and which are low. The order numbers with lower digits will have a higher priority.
Myself and other family members were able to complete our transactions in the first hour and my order number is: 2628XXX. Compare my order number with numbers from other purchases to find out where their orders rank on the list. Remember, mine was purchased in the first hour.
Another precaution when bidding on these coins on ebay is this: DO NOT bid on auctions from sellers that have zero or few positive feedback. This is an indication that a possible scam is under way. Always read feedback and be sure to communicate with any questions before bidding!
